Lake Apopka - Lake Apopka is the third largest lake in Florida and encompasses over 48 square miles. Even though it is the largest lake in the Orlando area, it is one of the shallowest. The average depth of Lake Apopka is 5 feet with an occasional depth of 18 feet due to the natural springs that feed the lake. It has been renowned for the quantity and quality of fish that can be caught on its shore and especially from boats. The early Florida maps state the lake was known as Anapopka, which suggests this is where the name Apopka came from. The Creek Indian language (a dialect of which the Seminiole Indians speak) has the term ah-apopka which roughly means potato-eating place. If you love golf, boating on the water, fishing and hiking, excellent outdoor recreational activities are available in and around the Apopka area. As part of Orange County Public Schools, Apopka schools are recognized for their emphasis on quality education, student involvement and athletic excellence.
